Weekly-Reflection (Post 2, Week 2)

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA)

I found the content shared this week on FIPPA to be particularly interesting. In today’s day and age our society spends a substantial amount of time on the internet and social media. It is important for everyone to be able to recognize how content and information is being shared online. As well as the difference between keeping your information private or public. In particular, educators should be well versed in understanding this concept as they will need to be able to share how this concept works with their students. This helps keep students safe and well educated on their internet use.

Below I have included a link to a video by the Office of the Information and Privacy commissioner of British Columbia that further explains how FIPPA was first introduced and how it works.

Personally, I have spent a lot of time on social media, online education platforms, the internet, etc from a young age. I think there is a lot of value on being educated on how your information and personal details are being shared and stored. Platforms need to clearly disclose how and what information they are collecting from the public. Additionally what they plan to use this information for. It is important platforms are held to a high standard in keeping your personal information safe and secure. They also need to be able to work with the public in allowing them to view public records. This ensures that online platforms keep their sites safe and fair for everyone.
